About Shoushan National Nature Park

Shoushan National Nature Park, also known as Monkey Mountain, is an ecological and cultural treasure situated in the heart of Kaohsiung City, Taiwan. Covering the forested slopes of Shoushan (Mount Shou), this park rises to 357 meters above sea level and features dense subtropical forests, limestone caves, and a diverse range of flora and fauna. It is best known for its large population of Formosan rock macaques, which attract both tourists and wildlife enthusiasts. The park's unique geography blends natural beauty with urban proximity, providing visitors easy access to nature without leaving the city.

The ecology of Shoushan is marked by mixed broadleaf evergreens and varied wildlife beyond its famous monkeys, including birds, butterflies, and reptiles. Historically, Shoushan was a military stronghold, and remnants of fortifications and tunnels can still be explored along some trails. Outdoor recreation is abundant here: hiking is the primary activity, with numerous well-maintained paths leading to viewpoints like the Summit Trail and the Xiaoliuqiu Lookout which provide sweeping vistas over Kaohsiung Harbor and the Taiwan Strait.

Visitors appreciate the park not only for hiking but also for birdwatching, photography, and ecological education. The park’s network of paved and dirt trails make it accessible to families and casual hikers. Shoushan's cultural elements and natural serenity offer a refreshing retreat from the bustling urban environment, making it a top destination for both locals and tourists seeking outdoor adventure and wildlife encounters close to the city.
